Albany International Airport: how the Capital Region’s airport is run

Albany’s airport traces its roots to 1928, when the city opened an airfield that was among the first municipal airports in the country. It moved to its current location in Colonie and was later taken over by Albany County.

Since 1993 the Albany County Airport Authority has run it. The authority pays its costs mainly through airline fees, parking, concessions and federal grants, not local property taxes.

The terminal

The current terminal opened in 1998 after a major rebuild, and it is known for its rotating art exhibits. In recent years the airport added a new parking garage, a larger security area and an expanded concourse with more food and shopping.

Airlines and routes

Southwest, Delta, American, United and other carriers fly nonstop to hubs and leisure destinations, including Florida. Passenger counts have been near or above 1.5 million a year in good years.

The airport also hosts cargo flights from FedEx and UPS, the New York Air National Guard and general aviation companies, all of which support jobs in Colonie.

For business travelers in the Capital Region, nonstop options and fares here are a constant topic, since many still drive to larger airports for cheaper flights.
